The Journey – Part I
The dark knight took his first steps, cautiously heading into the ever growing dark of the unforgiving night. It was black now even the brightest of stars had grown dim and faded from sight. The moon which once blessed these lands with heavenly beauty was nothing more than mere blackness; still the dark knight took his first steps with unwavering resolve. He could see nothing now, not the ground under his feet nor the rusted steel of the sword he now held so vigorously, the knight knew it would be a treacherous path to take, but he still had a hope, a hope so fragile to even think of it would result in its obliteration, but still he had to believe he could find what he was searching for, he had to believe he could find a better place.
The sounds of the night were upon the lone warrior, they existed with such ferocity they could pierce the very souls of men. The knight knew he could not falter from the path, to do so would surely result in his demise, his ears served as his sight, with only the sound of the old coble path to guide his steps. After a time which had seemed to be an eternity within the blackness, the knight felt something, a sensation not belonging to touch, more of a knowing, he knew he was not alone, he was being stalked, the creature which was now in pursuit had always been following him, but only once he was blinded by the incessant night could he truly see this.
The dark knight staggered now, tiring by what seemed to be an endless journey, yet unwilling to set up camp knowing that a terrifying evil perused him, his sword once in his mighty grasp now served only to support his weakening form, the rusted steel bending under the strain placed upon it.
Silence had crept up on the warrior, were it not for the sound of his own breath he would have excepted his own death in an instance, he was still alive, he knew this, but something was wrong, the cobles which once guided his feet were no longer there, only the soft desert sands, the knight had tired so much that he had not realised he left the safety of the great road behind him. And before him a pair of viscous green eyes now pierced the sea of blackness; I have surely found my death, spoke the knight, the creature which once stalked his path now inevitable stood before him. In that moment, without hesitation, without a fleeting glance, or even a stray thought, the knight knew what had to be done, he lifted the blade of his once beautifully crafted sword and charged forward, a lesser man would have fled, but that now inconceivable hope fuelled the brave knight’s courage.
A dim light now held embrace over the sand dune as though the gods themselves chose to aid the warrior, the knight and the beast charged towards the summit with unearthly speed, such as if they were to collide the very ground would quake and crumble away.
